We Must Fight Trump’s Escalating Attacks on Our Democracy

Trump’s suggestion to delay the November election furthers his march into authoritarianism

WASHINGTON, DC --  In a tweet this morning, Trump suggested the November election could be delayed, challenging the integrity of the upcoming election and attacking vote-by-mail. The Center for Popular Democracy issued the following statement from Co-Executive Director Jennifer Epps-Addison in response:

“Trump's suggestion to "delay" the November election is an escalation of illegal and authoritarian tactics from a lawless president, as he loses public support less than three months out from an election in the middle of an economic crisis that is causing unprecedented levels of suffering across this country. This comes after weeks of reckless, illegal executive actions, attacking the 2020 census and deploying federal agents to several cities to illegally detain, attack and intimidate protestors. The president does not have the power to change the date of the election and he continues to attempt to undermine the safest ways for voters to exercise their most fundamental of democratic rights. We see Trump's latest tweet for what it is—a direct threat to our democracy. 

Trump’s actions are meant to confuse and suppress voters, and they are a dereliction of the President’s oath to uphold the Constitution. We will keep mobilizing our communities to protect the right to vote and fight every attempt by the Trump Administration to destroy our constitutional democracy—whether on the streets of Portland or by attempting to delay our right to vote in free, fair, and safe elections on November 3rd.”
