“Our nation must come together to ensure democracy and rule of law come first and always before politics and hate.”
NEW YORK, NY — On the eve of a monumental election Popular Democracy joins organizations from multiple political ideologies and constituencies in order to uplift our shared commitment to a participatory democracy, uphold the rule of law and decry that there is no room for hate or violence in our practice of self governance. Today, Popular Democracy released the following statement from Co-Executive Director Analilia Mejia:
“With Election Day coming up in just over a week, it’s more important than ever to emphasize the common respect for democracy and the peaceful transition of power that is at the core of America’s existence.
“As we await the results of what we expect to be record-breaking voter turnout, we encourage our communities and those holding the levers of power within our electoral institutions alike, to engage with integrity and a commitment to the union our nation has struggled to make more just and fair since its inception.”
“Our democratic processes take time. We must have patience and faith that our systems are working as they should, allowing for legal challenges to be solved in appropriate courts so that the will of the people can be heard.
“No American is vermin. No American is garbage. While we may disagree with each other’s political ideas with passion at times, we must not allow hate, dehumanization and violence to have a place in this process. We must be a country that puts essential American values about our democracy and rule of law first.”
