“Today’s decision is historic and it is the result of the courage of young immigrants, their families, and organizations who fought for years to win and protect DACA”
WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, the Supreme Court of the United States issued their decision that confirms the Trump administration’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was illegal. The majority of Justices agreed that the Trump administration acted in an arbitrary and capricious way in rescinding the program in part because they failed to consider the reliance interests the DACA program created. However, the Trump administration could still try to end the DACA program.
The Center for Popular Democracy (CPD), a multiracial network composed of over 50 grassroots organizations fighting for racial and economic justice across the country, responded to this decision. CPD’s co-executive director Ana Maria Archila stated the following.
“Today’s decision is historic and it is the result of the courage of young immigrants, their families, and organizations who fought for years to win and protect DACA. This decision means that the 700,000 young people who currently have DACA will be able to continue to work and be protected from deportations. It also means that in the near future other young immigrants who meet the DACA requirements will be able to apply to receive the protections that DACA grants.
“While we celebrate this momentous victory, we recognize the fight is not over. We will continue to fight to protect DACA from any future attacks by this administration, while we fight for a more permanent solution to our broken immigration system. We will continue to fight to end detentions, deportations and the criminalization of our communities, which disproportionately impacts Black immigrants.
“The Supreme Court handed a serious defeat to Donald Trump, Stephen Miller, and their anti-immigrant, racist policy agenda. We know this victory is the result of the courage and efforts of millions of young immigrants who demanded to be seen as full human beings and who declared proudly that #HomeIsHere. The victory also belongs to the millions of people out on the streets for several weeks who are marching together to defend Black Lives, including the lives of black immigrants. That’s why today, we celebrate this joyous victory, and tomorrow we get ready to march on the historic Juneteenth weekend of actions to Defend Black Lives.”
