WASHINGTON, DC -- Center for Popular Democracy Action (CPD Action), a national network of more than 50 community organizing groups across the country, announced the endorsement of three progressive candidates in high-profile congressional and state races in Texas -- including Cristina Tzintzun Ramirez for US Senator from Texas; Jessica Cisneros for US House of Representatives from Texas (TX-28); and Jose Garza for District Attorney in Austin, Texas.
These early endorsements are set to send a jolt into the already significant grassroots effort behind their candidacy. In a crowded primary race, Cristina Tzintzun Ramirez has already garnered excitement as a candidate who comes out of grassroots movements in Texas and is poised to help build momentum to continue the efforts at flipping the state blue. With endorsements from Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jessica Cisneros is set to replace a more moderate incumbent and lend her expertise as an immigration and human rights attorney to fight for working families. Also challenging a lackluster incumbent, Jose Garza will help transform the criminal legal system in Texas by running on the most progressive criminal justice reform agenda in the state.
“We know that 2020 is an important year, not just for the presidency but for the future of our democracy. We care as much about the person who sits at the highest office in this country as we do about the congressional and state officials who are the gatekeepers for freedom and equality for our communities,” said Jennifer Epps-Addison, Co-Executive Director and Network President of CPD Action. “The three candidates we’ve endorsed today stand out - not only because they are pushing progressive ideas, but because they are committed to expanding a popular democracy in Texas and across the country. They are champions working to advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial justice agenda. They aren’t afraid of bold, radical ideas because they know we need a seismic shift in our politics to build a country that works for all of us!”
The network is set to make more endorsements over the course of 2020. Earlier this month, the group endorsed Bernie Sanders as the candidate best positioned to make real, structural change to address the interlocking systems of capitalism, patriarchy, and racism that affects this country.
